These photos were taken on May 24th 2010 at the SCAMIT barcoding meeting.
In case you were wondering what we were photographing yesterday, here are some of the pics, very lightly post-processed (mostly because it was late by the time we got to San Diego and my eyes were quite tired by then). I shot Raw + Jpg, and these are a few of the Jpgs that I’ve posted—the Raw images remain untouched, and I suspect they may come out a little better (or I hope).
I wanted to get something out to you all, just as a sampling…the sooner I finish this the better. Unfortunately with our worm workload here in CSD—there’s not really much time (read: no time at all) left for fun projects. By my count, I took photos of 40 different specimens, a total of 160 photos including labels.
This is the first time I’ve photomicro’ed crustaceans, so it was a learning experience for me. They are quite a bit more luminous in general than worms. I think I did not foresee so much shininess and reflection, and the plastic dishes probably didn’t help also. You’ll see a fair amount of fringing (blue and purple) on many of the pics—this is Kelvin’s bane—the dreaded purple fringing, but in general I am not as compulsively color worried as Kelvin. I may be able to fix any color fringes with the Raw images—I’m afraid that the translucent nature of these little crustaceans does require some special attention to color cast.
I apologize for distributing these photos on my personal photosharing site—not really feasible to email so many shots. Hope you don’t mind my holiday pictures mixed-in—I’d welcome any comments and/or criticism on the invert shots.
