3April11 - Speedy. A Galápagos giant tortoise (Chelonoidis nigra), Speedy was brought to the San Diego Zoo along with another 10 or so specimens in 1923 (at the time his estimated age was 20)--so Speedy has been somewhat of a celebrity on display for about 88 years. Still spry and quite active, he's just barely hitting his stride. Galápagos tortoises live around 100 years in the wild, but well over 160 years in captivity. Speedy will continue to delight and educate crowds long after I'm gone.
